Cotton Production In West Africa Has Declined Significantly Due To Insect Pests
According to the latest report of the American Agricultural Counsellor, the pests in Mali, Burkina Faso and Senegal will be particularly serious in 2022/23. Due to the increase of abandoned harvest area caused by pests and excessive rainfall, the cotton harvest area of the above three countries has dropped to the level of 1.33 million hectares a year ago. The cotton output is expected to be 2.09 million bales, a year-on-year decrease of 15%, and the export volume is expected to be 2.3 million bales, a year-on-year increase of 6%.

Specifically, Mali’s cotton area and output were 690000 hectares and 1.1 million bales, respectively, with a year-on-year decrease of more than 4% and 20%. The export volume was estimated to be 1.27 million bales, with a year-on-year increase of 6%, because the supply was sufficient last year. The cotton planting area and output in Senegal are 16000 hectares and 28000 bales, respectively, down 11% and 33% year on year. The export volume is expected to be 28000 bales, down 33% year on year. Burkina Faso’s cotton planting area and output were 625000 hectares and 965000 bales, respectively, up 5% and down 3% year on year. The export volume was expected to be 1 million bales, up 7% year on year.
