India Rainfall causes the quality of new cotton in the north to decline

This year’s non seasonal rainfall has undermined the prospects for increased production in northern India, particularly in Punjab and Haryana. The market report shows that the quality of cotton in North India has also declined due to the extension of the monsoon. Due to the short fiber length in this area, it may not be conducive to spinning 30 or more yarns.

According to cotton merchants from Punjab Province, due to excessive rainfall and delay, the average length of cotton has decreased by about 0.5-1 mm this year, and the fiber strength and fiber count and color grade have also been affected. A trader from Bashinda said in an interview that the delay in rainfall not only affected the yield of cotton in northern India, but also affected the quality of cotton in northern India. On the other hand, cotton crops in Rajasthan are not affected, because the state receives very little delayed rainfall, and the soil layer in Rajasthan is very thick sandy soil, so rainwater is not accumulated.

Due to various reasons, India’s cotton price has been high this year, but poor quality may prevent buyers from buying cotton. There may be problems when using this kind of cotton to make better yarn. Short fiber, low strength and color difference may be bad for spinning. Generally, more than 30 yarns are used for shirts and other clothes, but better strength, length and color grade are required.

Earlier, Indian trade and industrial institutions and market participants estimated that the cotton production in northern India, including Punjab, Haryana and the whole Rajasthan, was 5.80-6 million bales (170 kg per bale), but it was estimated that it was reduced to about 5 million bales later. Now traders predict that due to the low output, the output may be reduced to 4.5-4.7 million bags.
