UK Clothing Imports Decline In The Third Quarter, China’s Exports May Take A Turn For The Better

In the third quarter of 2023, Britain's clothing import volume and import volume decreased by 6% and 10.9% respectively year on year, of which the import to Türkiye decreased by 29% and 20% respectively, and the import to Cambodia increased by 16.9% and 7.6% respectively.

In terms of market share, Vietnam accounts for 5.2% of UK clothing imports, which is still much lower than China's 27%. The import volume and import value to Bangladesh account for 26% and 19% of clothing imports to the UK, respectively. Affected by currency depreciation, the import unit price of Türkiye rose by 11.9%. At the same time, the unit price of clothing imports from the UK to China in the third quarter decreased by 9.4% year-on-year, and the price drop may drive the recovery of China's textile industry chain. This trend has already been reflected in clothing imports from the United States.

In the third quarter, the import volume and value of clothing from the United States to China increased again, mainly due to the decrease in unit price, which increased the proportion of China's imports compared to the same period last year. Data shows that in the third quarter of this year, China's proportion of clothing imports to the United States increased from 39.9% in the same period last year to 40.8%.

In terms of unit price, China's unit price dropped the most significantly in the third quarter of this year, with a year-on-year decline of 14.2%, while the overall decline in the unit price of clothing imports in the United States was 6.9%. In contrast, the unit price of Chinese clothing decreased by 3.3% in the second quarter of this year, while the overall unit price of US clothing imports increased by 4%. In the third quarter of this year, the unit price of clothing exports in most countries has declined, in sharp contrast to the increase in the same period last year.
